Armenia har avdekket det som skal være et russisk kuppforsøk. I denne omgang er syv tiltalt.
A traditional Moscow ally, Armenia has pivoted to the West since the Ukraine war began, and its PM now says it could seek EU membership.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia said seven people would be charged with “preparing to usurp power … using violence and the threat of violence to take over the powers of government.”

According to the officials, six Armenians were recruited to undergo three months of training in Russia and were paid monthly salaries of 220,000 rubles ($2,377) while learning how to use weaponry. They also reportedly underwent background checks and polygraph tests to determine their allegiances, before being transferred to “Arbat military base” in Rostov-on-Don, southern Russia.

WotR: Escaping Russia’s Backyard: Armenia’s Strategic Defense Shift

Today, Armenia is no longer considered a “backyard of Russia,” as it has been for the last three decades. As a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020, Armenia’s defense and security policies are now shifting. This strategic realignment presents a historic opportunity for Armenia to redefine its geopolitical role, moving away from Moscow’s sphere of influence and toward Western allies.  In light of this shift, the United States and the European Union should provide Armenia with enhanced military support, thereby contributing to regional stability in the South Caucasus. By doing so, Western powers

Som avtalt har russiske vaktstyrker forlatt grenseovergangen mellom Armenia og Iran. De vært der siden 1991.
There are no more Russian guards at Amrenia’s Agarak checkpoint at its border with Iran. On Monday, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that the checkpoint is now under Armenia’s exclusive control, ending a border arrangement with Russia that dated back to the USSR’s disintegration in 1991. The Agarak checkpoint is the only known checkpoint on the Armenian-Iranian border.

In recent months, relations between Azerbaijan and Russia have grown increasingly strained. Beneath the surface of diplomatic formality lies a complex...

It appears that the two sides reached a preliminary understanding under which Armenia would unblock the corridor based on the "Kaliningrad transit model." This would allow uninterrupted movement of goods and people between mainland Azerbaijan and its exclave, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, via Armenia’s Syunik region—without customs inspections, in accordance with international transit agreements. This arrangement is clearly advantageous for both Azerbaijan and Türkiye, as it would establish a direct and secure connection between the two allied nations.
          (...)
Adding to the tensions are recent developments in Armenia, where authorities have initiated criminal proceedings against former National Security Service chief Artur Vanetsyan, General Karapetyan, and several clerics. Many experts interpret these actions as signs of a broader effort to eliminate pro-Russian elements within the Armenian establishment and accelerate Yerevan’s political realignment toward the West and closer regional cooperation with Türkiye.

The Moscow Times: Armenia Declines to Extradite Russian Soldier Who Refused to Fight in Ukraine

Semyon Subbotin, a former member of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces, had fled to Armenia after being placed on Russia’s wanted list for desertion.

Armenia har kalt inn Russlands ambassdør på teppet etter at TV-tullingen Vladimir Solovjov i helgen sa at Russland burde invadere Armenia og land i Sentral-Asia.
The Armenian Foreign Ministry summoned Russia’s ambassador in Yerevan on Monday to protest against a Kremlin-linked television host’s calls for Moscow to consider invading Armenia and other ex-Soviet states.
